About Me

non-slip, beautiful concrete finishes for pool decks

The surface around my in-ground swimming pool was always slippery when it was wet. I decided last year after watching my three year old son slip and fall for the last time that I was going to have a contractor come out and resurface the area around the pool. I have spent the last several months looking into the different concrete finishing techniques that will not only provide a safe, non-slip surface, but that would also look really nice around the pool. To find out what options you have to create a non-slip beautiful surface around your pool, visit my site.

Three Uses For Ready-Mix Concrete That You May Not Have Considered (But Should!)

by Bessie Armstrong

Ready-mix concrete is typically a tool to repair or replace something else made of concrete. As a homeowner, you probably have not given this substance more thought than that. However, there are many more uses for this construction substance than you have previously given it credit. The following are some creative approaches to unusual problems, and how you can use pre-mixed concrete to resolve them, even if it is only a temporary solution.

Ready-Mix to Precast Concrete Retaining Walls

If your home lives close to a river or lake, you probably experience some type of flooding in and around your home at least once a year. If you would like to avoid that in the coming year, you can use a casting mold to create sections of a dyke or retaining wall. You will want the sections to be at least three feet tall, with minimal gaps in between each section. If you also push heavy steel rings into the cast concrete before it dries, then you can use chains and a pickup truck to drag them in and out of position around your home's perimeter.

Pool Drainage Trench

Draining your pool every fall is often a nightmare. If you pay someone else to drain it, it will cost you. If you drain it, you always have to figure out where to pump the water such that it does not make a mess for your neighbors or end up polluting the environment with pool chemicals. Fortunately for you, pre-mixed concrete can create a simple trench from your pool to the street gutter, providing a channel for all your chemically treated pool water to safely exit your pool.

Pet Grave Markers

Although this really is not a problem, it could become one if you decide to dig up your yard and put in some new landscaping. It would freak out the kids to see Fluffy's skeleton unearthed and probably start a whole new set of problems. To avoid this, simply encourage your kids to create a grave marker with a little ready-mix concrete and an aluminum baking pan and put it on the graves of each pet you bury in your yard. They will enjoy the creative (albeit slightly morbid) craft and you will never forget not to dig in a certain area of your yard.
