About Me

non-slip, beautiful concrete finishes for pool decks

The surface around my in-ground swimming pool was always slippery when it was wet. I decided last year after watching my three year old son slip and fall for the last time that I was going to have a contractor come out and resurface the area around the pool. I have spent the last several months looking into the different concrete finishing techniques that will not only provide a safe, non-slip surface, but that would also look really nice around the pool. How To Patch Concrete Cracks

by Bessie Armstrong

Maintaining concrete around your property usually something you don't need to worry about very often. But, over the years, there's a good chance that your concrete surfaces are going to crack to some extent. Small pressure cracks are extremely common, and they are mostly harmless. However, many people don't like the way they look, even when they are small. Furthermore, when a crack forms, the edges of that crack can get worn down and chipped off over time, causing it to be become bigger and more noticeable. Of course, there is also the problem of weeds or grass growing out of the cracks.

The Best Supplies for Patching Concrete

So, even though small pressure cracks probably don't represent any significant structural problems, you should consider patching them as soon as possible. Patching concrete is very easy if you use over the counter products. Concrete crack is meant to fill in and repair small cracks. It is infused with heavy duty adhesives that help the filler stick inside the crack. Crack filler is nice permanent solution, but it will not reinforce the structural integrity of any concrete slab. It can also prevent small cracks from growing and becoming more problematic, but if your slab is shifting dramatically due to the soil underneath moving around, there is really nothing you can do about it.

Applying the Crack Filler

Crack filler comes in large tubs and caulk tubes. The caulk tubes are convenient for narrow cracks because it allows you to squeeze the filler into the crack without getting it all over the top of your concrete. Some people make the mistake of spreading the concrete over the top of the crack and onto the actual walking surface. However, you just want the concrete to fill in the crack. The crack filler will crumble and break off if you spread it to thinly on the top surface. A metal blade putty knife is the best tool for scraping the extra filler away to create a smooth and uniform finish.

After the crack filler is applied and dried, you can finish it off in a number of ways. You can just leave it as it is. If you have polished concrete, you can also buff or sand it down to match the texture of your existing surface. If your concrete has a tint or stain, you can apply a stain to help the colors match a little better.
