About Me

non-slip, beautiful concrete finishes for pool decks

The surface around my in-ground swimming pool was always slippery when it was wet. I decided last year after watching my three year old son slip and fall for the last time that I was going to have a contractor come out and resurface the area around the pool. I have spent the last several months looking into the different concrete finishing techniques that will not only provide a safe, non-slip surface, but that would also look really nice around the pool. How To Clean Different Types Of Stains From Your Concrete

by Bessie Armstrong

When you have stains on your concrete, you need to make sure that you address them and take care of them right away. The sooner you get rid of the stain, the better the chance you have of removing the stain.

Oil Stains

Oil and other auto stains are really common on parking lots and in driveways. Many vehicles leak out grease and oil. If you see the oil spots right away, try to blot away the oil if possible. Kitty litter is a great way to absorb grease and oil if you put it on the stain right away and allow it to sit overnight.

If the stain persists, you can use a commercial degreaser in order to get rid of the product. Apply the degreaser, allow it sit the right amount of time, then scrub and rinse away the stain.

Leaf or Mulch Stain

In the fall, leaf and mulch stains are common. They are really easy to get rid of, though. For mulch and leaf stains, just apply some environmentally friendly soap or vinegar to the stain and then brush away at the stain. Then, rinse away the stain with your hose.

If the stain is really deep set, you can mix a tiny bit of bleach with some warm water. Put the solution on the stain and allow the solution to sit for a half hour or so. After that, scrub the stain where the solution is applied; be sure to wear gloves and keep the bleach off your person, as it will stain. Then, rinse away the bleach and hopefully the stain.

General Stains

For general stains that you are not sure of the origin, you can use a solution of baking soda and water. Mix enough water to turn the baking soda into a paste, and apply the paste to the stain. Let the mixture sit for a few minutes, then use a scrub brush to try and lift the stain out of the concrete. Then, rinse away the cleaning solution as well the dirt.

General Cleaning

For general cleaning needs, you can use a hose with a spray attachment or a pressure washer. A pressure washer is designed specifically for these types of jobs. The force of the water will help lift up and remove dirt and other particles that have become ground into the surface of your cement. Always treat and remove oil patches and set-in stains before pressure washing though, as the pressure can actually set-in those types of stains.

The key to a good looking driveway is to stay proactive with your cleaning and deal with stains right away. Contact a ready mix concrete professional for more help.
